Of all the famous dolphins in media, Flipper is probably the most beloved. He is an iconic wild dolphin that captured the hearts of America in a 1963 film of boy named Sandy. The boy bonds with Flipper after helping him recover from a deadly spear injury. Conflict comes in the form of disapproval of their friendship by the boy´s fisherman father, who eventually learns that Flipper is lovable after all.

The movie served a great introduction for the following TV series than ran from 1964 to 1967. In the series, Sandy´s character is still portrayed as a young boy with Flipper as his childhood friend. Two distinct departures are noticeable from the movie: Sandy´s father is a park ranger, and Flipper is now the family pet.
